1 Introduction
Beside crucial design parameters like on-state resistance and gate charge the avalanche ruggedness of a MOSFET is very important. For many designers the avalanche ruggedness of a MOSFET is a "fuzzy" parameter. That leads to exaggerated design rules in terms of safety margins for SMPS applications, e.g. avoiding avalanche completely and having a safety margin of even 20% left. This approach costs efficiency and thus money since more or more expensive components have to be used to deal with additional losses.
This paper will give an insight into the conjunction between different MOSFET parameters and will help to build an understanding for critical tradeoffs.
